AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada Update
August 15, 2017
The 2017-2018 AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada Board met for the first time prior to the Canadian Leadership Retreat in Ottawa, Ontario last month.
Roger Ali, CFRE (right), president & CEO of the ONEFOUNDATION for Niagara Health System, began his chairmanship on July 1, 2017, and has identified two key goals that he would like to accomplish under his term:
- Strengthen communications with chapter leaders by providing information in a measured and integrated way. With more engagement with the chapters, it will build a supportive network for the Foundation.
- Develop an integrated fundraising plan that includes the Every Member Campaign and major gifts work. It also must include a stewardship component.
The Foundation is currently raising money for the following four program areas:
Diversity & Inclusion: 61 Fellows graduated through the Ontario-based Fellowship in Inclusion and Philanthropy program supported by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade. The Foundation is now raising funds to expand this program across the country. By embedding diversity and inclusion in the fundraising profession, we will grow philanthropy and increase charities’ impact and donor engagement.
Research: The fourth iteration of “What Canadian Donors Want” will be launched this Fall with results available in early 2018. We strive to conduct research that informs the public and the charitable sector about donor behaviour, ethical fundraising practices, and emerging issues facing charities.
Supporting the Profession through skill development: Through the National Scholarship Program, the Foundation funds scholarships to educational opportunities across the country. Deadlines for applications occur each year on September 15 and March 15. We champion professional development so fundraisers can succeed in new responsibilities at different stages in their careers.
Leadership: One of the key areas of concern expressed by fundraising professionals is the leadership gap that will result over the next ten years as baby boomers retire. The Foundation led a strategic session at the Retreat addressing this need. We need to develop the next generation of volunteers and professional fundraising leaders who are prepared for 21st century philanthropy.
