2016 National Philanthropy Day in Canada

While NPD 2016 has just recently come and gone, it’s time to shift our thinking forward to 2017 and the celebration of Canada’s 150th Anniversary.
First and foremost, thank you to His Excellency, the Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, for his warm and welcoming video message presented at almost all of our NPD events in the country. His message is important as we consider how Canadians can contribute to our “civil society” and make it welcoming and inclusive. Our world is changing at a rapid rate, and we need to be reminded about what is important in our lives and what we value as Canadians.
Thanks also goes to all AFP members who support NPD and their local chapter events. Without this network of recognition events, professional development opportunities and awareness-raising, our roles in the non-profit sector would be much more difficult. It would be even harder to raise the funds that fuel our economy with critical program support and broad-based education. We are teaching the next generation how to lead our country in the future!
Giving, in whatever form it takes, can include all Canadians, not just those with the capacity to have huge impact through transformational gifts. Philanthropy is represented in the most simple of acts: helping a neighbour with shoveling snow or giving blood or signing an organ donation card. Cash does not need to be king. Rather, the act of giving of yourself can, and does, bring value to every act. In fact, as Bob Burg and John David Mann state in The Go-Giver, “The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.”
This year, our National NPD Committee has been working in the background to plan what we can do in 2017 to honour the visionary leaders in our country who have been at the forefront of advancing philanthropy in all of its forms. We plan an exciting day celebrating the spirit of NPD and its impact on bettering the lives of Canadians, and we want to ensure that our message is spread far and wide.
