2015 Leadership Academy in Kansas City
November 18, 2015
Every year in the fall, AFP hosts the annual Leadership Academy, which serves as the annual gathering of the association’s leadership, including our international Board of Directors, chapter Leaders and members in various leadership roles within AFP. The first Leadership Academy was held in Lexington, Ky., in 2007 after AFP updated its by-laws to reflect a new structure from the former Delegate Assembly format.
The Leadership Academy has continued to provide relevant speakers focusing on issues related to personal, professional organizational and chapter growth. It is a time when chapter leaders can come together with each other and focus on serving the membership through the extensive AFP chapter system. Like-size Chapter Meetings are held where chapter can collaborate together on common issues and challenges.
During our meetings in Kansas City, the AFP Board also chartered three new chapters, including two in Canada. The new chapters include the AFP Central Ontario Chapter, the AFP Carleton Collegiate Chapter, and the AFP Texas, Midland Collegiate Chapter. AFP now has a total of 243 chapters around the world.
The Leadership Academy is also the time that the Committee on Directorship representative is elected from the respective districts to serve for the next year. The Chapter Presidents Council (CPC) also elects a representative to sit on the AFP International Board for a one-year term as the voice of the CPC. This year, we elected Valerie Mardle from the Central Florida Chapter in Orlando to serve as the 2016 CPC Representative to the Board.
Although there are meetings to attend, inspirational speakers to listen to and tips on how to improve your Chapter’s performance, there is always time for play in the various cities that have hosted the Leadership Academy—from Las Vegas to Montréal! This year was no exception, with a key Toronto Blue Jays game in the ALCS vs. the Kansas City Royals. A few baseball fans secured tickets to watch a game of lifetime and get some airtime on Fox Sports!
Many of your Canadian colleagues maximized their trip to Kansas City by either attending the ALCS, the Kansas City Chiefs game, visiting a famous haunted house in the old John Deere warehouse or taking-in a world-class museum. It all happened in KC!
Next year in Portland, Ore., Oct. 20 – 22, will be just as great, so makes sure your chapter plans to have a representative attend!
