Chapter President's Message

Happy 2018!

Let’s resolve to make this year the best for philanthropy and fundraising in Arizona. To that end your AFP chapter board has put together some great programming, including an outstanding slate of educational programs. One theme you’ll see this year is outreach to new communities and new professionals, including different times and locations for our monthly meetings.

We begin the year with a breakfast session on January 9th at Mesa Community College. This session will feature internationally renowned author and speaker, Penelope Cagney, who will share best practices in capital campaigns. Penelope has served on the faculty of the Nonprofit Management Institute at Arizona State University, and has taught at American University in Cairo, Egypt, Columbia College, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. 

On February 7th, we return to our luncheon format and will explore the ethic dilemmas of honoring donors’ intents and balancing regulatory requirements in a session titled, “Staying Out of the Headlines: Dirty Money and Gifts with Strings … Ethics, the Law and Morality in Fundraising.” Led by local experts Ellis McGehee Carter, JD, LLM, and Sandra Searle, CFRE, this interactive discussion will be hosted at Estrella Mountain Community College in the West Valley and should be a “must attend” for volunteer leaders as well as development professionals.

We are pleased to welcome Mary Kaufman-Cranney, VP of the Alford Group, to present on March 6th on the topic of building a culture of philanthropy. Mary was honored in 2015 as outstanding fundraiser of the year in the state of Washington and brings 30 years of experience with groups including the Nature Conservancy, the YMCA, and the Seattle Opera to share with our membership. This breakfast will be held at Gateway Community College. 

In addition to this great schedule of educational sessions, we will be hosting the monthly AFP International webinars, and welcoming a new class to our nationally-recognized professional mentoring program. We will also continue to collaborate with Planned Giving Roundtable, the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits and the Organization of Nonprofit Executives on special workshops and initiatives important to our philanthropic community.

Make sure to share this exciting agenda with your executive team, board members, co-workers, and colleagues as we advance the fundraising profession and all the social-profit organizations throughout our state.
