AFP 2009 Committee Descriptions

Thank you for your interest in volunteering on a committee. See below for committee descriptions and contact information. Please complete a volunteer interest form and turn it in to Nichole Barnes, Volunteer Chair, at volunteers@afpaz.org.  If you have any questions, you may contact the appropriate committee chair or Karen Santoni at 602-663-7068. 

Advancement Fund Committee
Committee Chair: Anne White, CFRE, Ph.D

Committee Objective: To educate the membership about the importance of supporting the fundraising profession through their personal philanthropy, and for conducting an annual campaign to support the AFP Foundation as well as local educational programs.
Committee Members needed: 3-5
Member Responsibilities: To help contact chapter members to explain the importance of the Every Member Campaign and to solicit their support.
Meeting Time/Place: Immediately following the monthly chapter luncheon for the months of March, May, July, September and November.  Meetings typically will last no more than 30 minutes.

Career Services Committee
Committee Chair:  Mary Lee Hoffman, CFRE

Committee Objectives:
-To facilitate the communication of positions available in the nonprofit community
-To provide career-related workshops to development professionals
-To coordinate AFP After 5 which provides social/networking opportunities for development professionals
-To shepherd the resume counseling service available to members who are seeking employment in the nonprofit community
-To lead the One Person Shop Series that brings together development professionals who have sole responsibility for fundraising in their organizations
-To develop and launch a networking group in the West Valley for development professionals
Committee Members needed: 1 or 2
Member Responsibilities: each is leading and/or working on at least one of the objectives listed above
Meeting Time/Place: Bi-monthly from 11:30-12:30 at the Arizona Community Foundation

Communications Committee
Committee Chair:  Elaine Fogel

Committee Objective: Internal communications are primarily made through the chapter e-newsletter and announcements at our monthly meetings, but that may be changed as the committee considers the chapter's goals for the year. 
Committee Members needed: 5-8
Member Responsibilities: Their task is to promote the work and values of AFP through all media sources.  At present, we are responsible for reaching both internal and external audiences but that may change to only internal audiences this year as the Board considers the addition of a new board member for Marketing. 
Meeting time/place: Committee meeting time and place will be determined by the committee members; most likely we’ll meet monthly.

Education Committee
Committee Chair:  Penelope Cagney, CFRE

Committee Objective:  To implement educational programs through special guest speakers, workshops and other programs, and through the dissemination of information in articles in the newsletter, handouts, etc, that foster the professional growth of chapter members and others in the field of fundraising.
Committee Members needed: 10-12
Length of Commitment: One year
Member Responsibilities: 
Identify and recruit potential speakers that align with chapter mission.
Implement the following educational activities:
  Luncheons and workshops
Work with other AFP Committees and adminstration to:
  Seek sponsorship
  Publicize
  Liaise with speakers
  Coordinate other details, like budget and timeline
  AFP Audio Conference Programs and/or other programs as required
Work with Chapter staff and volunteers to:
  Publicze offerings to membership
  Evaluate educational offerings
  Obtain CEU's for CFRE certification
Meeting Time/Place: Meets quarterly or as needed at a time and place TBD

Government Relations Committee
Committee Chair:  Marla Bassler

Committee Objective: To monitor legislation at both the national and state level that could or will have an impact on the fundraising profession and to relay this information to the membership.  To educate the membership on the legislative process in Arizona and provide tips and ideas on communicating with legislators on issues related to fundraising by nonprofit organizations.
Member Responsibilities: Review various email alerts, email newsletters and websites discussing current and proposed legislation that could impact fundraising in Arizona.  Present this information to the membership through such methods as approved email alerts and the chapter e-newsletter.
Meeting Time/Place:  Every other month immediately following AFP luncheon meetings.

Membership Committee
Committee Chair:  Louise Bowden, CFRE

Committee Objective: To coordinate activities related to Chapter membership.

Member Responsibilities:
1. Assist in analyzing membership program.
2. Communicate with member prospects, new members and lapsed members via email, telephone and direct mail.
3. Assist in planning membership drive.

Philanthropy Dinner Committee

Committee Objective:  For more than 20 years, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Greater Arizona Chapter, celebrated Nation Philanthropy Day by recognizing individuals who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to
leadership in philanthropy and volunteerism. Each November, the Annual Philanthropy Leadership Awards Dinner continues that tradition by honoring the contributions of many wonderful people who are advancing philanthropy in our community. In addition to five Outstanding Leadership Awards presented each year, AFP members who purchase a table
are given the opportunity to recognize one of their organization's most committed supporters with a Spirit of Philanthropy Award. The Dinner is attended by more than 800 non-profit executives, board members, civic leaders and philanthropists each year.  A 15-member volunteer committee organizes all aspects of the annual event, including Spirit of Philanthropy Awards, Leadership Awards, production of a tribute video, invitations, reservations and publicity.

Scholarship Committee

Committee Objective: To offer and promote scholarships to AFP members.
Member Responsibilities: Assist with the promotion of available scholarships and to assist in the scholarship review and awarding process as well as scholarship promotion/advertising.

Sponsorship Committee
Committee Chair: Ken Brissa

Committee Objective: To help defray costs and earn some revenue by soliciting paid sponsorships for meetings and for the annual dinner.
Member Responsibilities: Same as above

Committee members needed:  Would welcome any number who feel that they can bring in sponsorships with their contacts.

Volunteer Committee
Committee Chair: Karen Santoni

Committee Objective: To encourage AFP membership to volunteer on various committees by tracking member interests, writing member profiles in monthly newsletter and to have volunteers to help with greeting and registration at monthly luncheons.
Member Responsibilities: Attend committee meetings, assist with the planning and implementation of volunteer management and recruitment activities planned by the committee.

CRFE Resource Committee
Committee Chair:  Sandra Jorgensen, CFRE

Committee Description:  The Certification Committee for the Greater Arizona Chapter of AFP promotes attaining the CFRE credential throughout the year.  The Committee provides the support needed for AFP members to pursue certification through group Q&A sessions, one-on-one assistance meetings, CFRE Exam Study Sessions and a promotional/teaching session at a chapter luncheon, annually.  In addition, the Committee works closely with the Board to recognize all member CFREs on an annual basis.

Through the efforts of a Certification Committee working with a Chairman who has Board representation, it is recommended that the Chapter take a pro-active stance rather than a reactive one in promoting certification to chapter members. Several members, all CFREs will comprise the committee to provide leadership and support for implementing the committee plan, including those teaching for the Exam Study Series.   The Committee Chair will oversee implementation of the plan through its committee members.
Committee Member Responsibilities:  Assist with promotion of the CFRE, why it's important, the process, exam preparation thorough the chapter newsletter, special meetings and the AFP CFRE Review Course given annually.
Committee members needed: none at this time.
Meeting times/place:  4-6 times a year/location fluctuates

Professional Mentoring Committee
Committee Chair:  Hazel Richards, CFRE

Committee Objective: To develop curriculum and structured mentor program for new development professionals.
Committee Members needed: none at this time 
Member Responsibilities:  To assist in the recruitment of prospective mentees and mentors, evaluate mentee candidate applications and select and match mentees and mentors for each year's new class, plan and prepare for each year's calendar of activities and events, and participate in the evaluation of the program.
Meeting Time/Place: Varies
