AFP Featured on KAET Channel 8!
As our resident cross-cultural ‘guru’, AFP board member Mark Walker not only successfully spearheaded this month’s Hispanics in Philanthropy luncheon and panel discussion, he landed a spot on KAET’s Horizonte program which aired on Thursday, November 5th!
Mark shared about the reasons behind the luncheon event along with his work in building partnerships with Latino communities both locally and internationally in terms of philanthropy. We deeply thank Mark for his efforts and for representing our AFP chapter on this exciting program!

Consider a Gift to our AFP Chapter Scholarship Fund!
While many of you have made a commitment to the Every Member Campaign – and we thank you for your support – we are asking all of you to consider a gift to our Greater Arizona Chapter Scholarship Fund – our goal is $3,000 – and we need your help!
This year we all recognize the challenges facing our organizations – reducing expense budgets, cutting staff hours or even staff, while still trying to provide the services so needed in the community
Our AFP Chapter is no different, and while our Board of Directors has carefully reviewed our budget and has reduced expenses over the course of the year, one of the areas it has impacted is our Scholarship Assistance Fund.
Requests for scholarship assistance to programs and conferences, as well as the support of our Professional Education Mentor Program, have increased, but the fund cannot meet the demand.
That’s why your donation is so important, and is a perfect way to ‘invest’ back into strengthening the profession of fundraising. Gifts can be made in any denomination – by check or credit card – just go to our website and download the Scholarship Fund form, complete the information, and mail it to our chapter office.
Your support is greatly appreciated and will help provide the important education and training so important to success – give a gift which truly makes a difference – and helps people achieve their goals in life! For a donation form, click here!

Communications Committee
Congrats to Laine Seaton, our incoming committee chair for 2010, for her work in getting AFP some TV exposure! Laine was able to get Mark Walker, our Hispanic Initiative chair, an on-air interview on KAET’s Horizonte program. As soon as we upload the segment to our Web site, we’ll let you know so you can take a peek.
The committee is working on the development of an electronic communications policy for the chapter. Once presented to the board and approved, we’ll have something definitive for our members and partners who wish to send e-blasts or post content to our newsletter and/or Web site.
Join the 2010 AFP Professional Mentor Program!
You can be one of the dozens of graduates who have benefited from this valuable program offered by AFP Greater AZ. The 8-month program guides nonprofit professionals new to the fundraising field (1-5 years) through a structured development curriculum and enables them to master and move beyond the basics.
Hear what soon-to-be graduate, Loren Klecka of the Phoenix Symphony shares about her experience in the AFP Professional Mentor Program.
“The AFP Mentor Program has not only allowed me to effectively conduct a project within my organization under the guidance of my professional mentor, but I have gained fundamental knowledge in the basic components of a fundraising program. I am confident that the AFP Mentor Program has given me the practices I need to continue to be a successful fundraiser both now and in the future.”
Applications are due December 11, 2009. Program cost is $195. Click here for Mentor Application.
Don’t Forget To Track!

Just a reminder to folks who are pursuing their CFRE to make sure to keep track of the AFP programs you attend by using the CFRE Tracking Form. Your attendance will count as Continuing Education points towards CFRE certification or recertification.

The Organization for Nonprofit Executives (ONE) is pleased once again to announce the 8th Annual Nonprofit ’Director of the Year’ Awards. ONE seeks to recognize nonprofit directors who are outstanding examples of certain principals ONE values in its ranks of Nonprofit Executives in Maricopa County.
So much effort, energy, imagination and concern has been expended by the Chief Professional Officers (CPOs)* of Maricopa County nonprofits through the past tough year. This is the perfect opportunity for peers, staff, board members, and community members to promote the achievements and community impact of the dedicated work of nonprofit CPOs who have distinguished themselves in one of the following four areas:
• Organizational Leadership Award For chief professional officers whose outstanding leadership has resulted in major accomplishments for their nonprofit organization during a twelve month period between October 2008 through December 2009.
• Community Partnership Award For chief professional officers who have played a lead role in developing partnerships or collaborations that continue to make a significant community impact.
• Innovation Award For chief professional officers who have led the development of different and more effective ways of addressing a community problem or delivering services to the community during a twelve month period between October 2008 through December 2009.
• Leader of Distinction Award For executives with ten or more consecutive years of experience as chief professional officer of a Maricopa County nonprofit. This executive has exhibited qualities of an outstanding leader for a sustained period of time.
Nominations must be submitted online and by letter by December 11, 2009.
Nominations will be judged by a prestigious panel of nonprofit Executive Directors, CEO’s and business partners. The Awards will be presented at ONE Nonprofit Leader Day on March 17. 2010!
