Save the Family is looking for a Volunteer Coordinator to spearhead and implement a robust Volunteer program, while managing and developing our existing group and individual volunteer programs.

Our story: Founded in 1988 in Mesa, Arizona, Save the Family is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that specializes in providing housing, supportive services and case management for over 650 homeless, low-income and veteran families annually.  We have a robust Career Development Center, Adult classes which include topics such as parenting, financial literacy, personal support, domestic violence, nutrition, etc., children’s programs, and supportive services for veterans.  More than 50 families are falling into homelessness each week in the Phoenix area.

As Save the Family grows to serve the needs of more homeless and low-income families, we need an experienced and passionate Volunteer Coordinator who can work closely with the rest of the team to shape and implement an ambitious volunteer program strategy. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for overseeing all group and individual volunteer opportunities and activities of the organization. While Save the Family has already put frameworks for these group and individual volunteer opportunities in place, our hope is to add an amazing leader to our team who will partner with us to bring this work to the next level.

REPORTS TO: Chief Development Officer

SUPERVISES: Donations Center staff, Volunteers and Americorp staff as needed


Group and Individual Volunteer Development & Management (60%)

Improve and implement our group & individual Volunteer program (Minimum 8-projects a month)

Increase volunteer engagement by developing and promoting a wide variety of volunteer opportunities to support the organizations programs

Conduct and/or arrange for volunteer orientations and trainings, always looking for ways to connect volunteers to financial contribution opportunities

Evaluate Volunteer department practices regularly and make improvements as needed

Manage a volunteer cultivation portfolio with the purpose of fostering volunteer relationships in hopes to turn them into financially contributing donors.  This will be done through planned volunteer “touches”, snapshots of success, newsletters, thank you notes, acknowledgments, etc.

Work closely with the Development Team to establish/foster relationships with community business groups, including the management of corporate volunteer opportunities, to leverage volunteer activities for Save the Family

Holiday Sponsorship Program Management (25%)

Along with the designated person in the Direct Service Program Department, Volunteer Coordinator will supervise and coordinate the Development piece of the Holiday Sponsorship program and will own the procedure description and process

Employer Volunteer Fairs/Expos & Speaking Engagements (10%)

Working with the Development Team, Volunteer Coordinator will be the lead staff to attend Volunteer Fairs, epos or other speaking engagements that have to do with Volunteerism.

In Kind Donations (5%)

With the Chief Development Officer, develop in-kind donation strategies and messaging

Oversee in-kind donation entry and reporting


We will review applications on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

We will begin scheduling phone interviews immediately.

In-person interviews will be scheduled starting August 21, 2017.

Finalists will be invited to a second-round one-hour interview, and we will make an offer shortly thereafter.

We would like to have the selected candidate start in August-September.

Essential Requirements

A great sense of humor!

Public Speaking abilities

A love for fundraising and volunteerism

A strong team player

A High School Diploma or GED + 1 year of related nonprofit/volunteer program experience

Must be 25 years of age or older due to liability insurance requirements and must have a valid Arizona Driver’s License, reliable transportation, current auto insurance and clean driving record

Able to work regular evenings and weekends – flexible schedule

Commitment to our mission and our values of Equity, Integrity, Community, Action, and Transformation

Computer skills – must be able to type at least 40 wpm and knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suites, donor or volunteer management software, social media and be resourceful

Ability to track and run accurate reports for the Volunteer Department

Dynamic fund development and donor cultivation abilities

Experience working with faith based communities grassroots organizations, and corporations with a nuanced understanding of matching people with engagement opportunities

Flexibility and adaptability, able to shift styles to fit the needs of a wide range of cultures, people, and organizations

High emotional intelligence, able to easily develop deep, trusting relationships with co-workers and individuals from many different backgrounds

Impeccable written and oral communication skills

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range of $36,000-40,000 based on experience

Full-time, non-exempt position, working an average of 40 hours per week.
